I was tested on my own advice recently regarding supporting plugin developers. For the past few weeks I’ve been struggling with getting WP-FB-AutoConnect to work with BuddyPress. You would think that it would naturally, but instead it would bork when trying to access Member activity, profiles, etc. The developer was gracious in offering that it was only tested with WP and that he had no experience with BP. Still, others seemed to have no issues. I was flummoxed.

After some (gentle?) chiding by a BuddyPress.org for rating the plugin poorly (because it didn’t work. duh!), it came to light that the issue is one of username compatibility between WP and BP. So, if you add to your wp-config.php file the following statement it will work as expected:

define( ‘BP_ENABLE_USERNAME_COMPATIBILITY_MODE’, true );

It changes the behaviour of BP such that uses the auto-generated username rather than the full name received from Facebook.

What was learned from this? Well, the issue between myself and the forum moderator was that he wasn’t taking into account that his experience was not relevant because he had already modified his config file. It’s a common faux pas, when supporting others, to remember to go back to a common base before assuming someone has screwed something up.

So with that, I heartily recommend the plugin for use with BuddyPress. It lowers the barrier of creating yet another login for site visitors that would like to join in the community discussions.

I shared this with a client today, thought it would be helpful to share for those who didn’t catch the land grab last year.

Facebook now allows you to customize the URL that points to your personal page as well as any Fan Page you are an administrator of. The only requirement for the Fan Page is that you must have at least 50 followers (it started with a 1,000 follower requirement last June).

To get started, go to http://www.facebook.com/username/. It may initially offer you the chance to customize your personal page URL, if you have not done so already. Once completed or skipped, the option should appear to select the Fan Page(s) you want to customize.

It’s a great way to make it easier for your organization’s Fan Page to be found.

The number one question we get asked about our company is always where the name came from. Here’s the deal: since I was 17, I’ve been coding, building PCs and generally being a technology geek. In high school, I spent much of my time managing their computer systems. A network of Apple II computers, the networking operating system was called Constellation, from a company called Corvus. Corvus happens to be a constellation, get it?

After high school I began doing more freelance work, and wanted a DBA name to use. Because of the great experiences I learned in school, I researched other constellations and decided to adopt one myself, settling on Carina, another constellation in the southern hemisphere. It is also Latin for “keel”, which I also liked because it represents a significant structural element to a vessel. And that’s what I envisioned: a company that, through technology, provides the structural support our customers need to be successful.

And now, you know
